Artist: Meena Parhad
Meena Parhad is a distinguished Warli painting artist from the tribal Warli community of Maharashtra. She learned the art form from her mother and grandmother, continuing a long tradition of women in her community who use art to depict their culture. Meena’s paintings focus on themes of social life, nature, and community celebrations, often incorporating traditional motifs such as geometric shapes representing natural elements like the sun, moon, and mountains.
Meena participates in local exhibitions to display her artwork, especially in Dahanu district, where she helps preserve the authentic storytelling behind Warli art. She emphasizes the cultural importance of these works, which are considered a form of language or “lipi” by the Adivasi community. Her dedication to keeping Warli art true to its roots is reflected in her belief that each painting should carry a story, something she feels non-Adivasi artists often miss. Alongside her husband, Sanjay Parhad, Meena actively contributes to the recognition and preservation of Warli art.
