About this artwork
This painting represents the traditional Tarpa dance, a form of celebration in the Warli tribal culture of Maharashtra, India. This dance is performed by people when paddy is ready for harvest and goes till Diwali and the dance will stop after doing Puja for the Gram Dev. The figures are depicted in a spiral formation, symbolizing the unity of the community. The dancers hold hands and move in sync with the rhythm of the Tarpa, a wind instrument. Tarpa is made of bamboo, Loki, tad leaves and honeycomb wax, played by a central figure known as Tarpakari. Each dancer is triangular body and circular head are drawn with minimalistic detail, highlighting the simplicity and harmony of rural life. Everyone irrespective of age or gender joins without discrimination and dances together in circular form which can grow big and can go unending .
Surrounding the spiral, elements of everyday life are illustrated huts, trees, and scenes of farming showing the connection between dance, nature, and daily existence. The white figures stand out against the earthy brown background, created using natural dyes, reflecting the deep-rooted bond between the Warli people and their environment. The painting is not just a depiction of a dance but a reflection of the Warli way of life, filled with celebration, nature, and community.
